his has two treadles and weaves warp-faced bands with ease. The process seen here can be described as follows: 1. Step on the treadle. 2. Hold the shuttle between thumb and forefinger of the left hand. 3. Beat weft with knife. 4. Stuff the shuttle through the shed. 5. Keep palm up, thumb over band, rest of hand under band. 6. Grab shuttle on far side of band. 7. Keep palm up, thumb over band, rest of hand under band. 8. Tug weft to adjust band width. 9. Step on the next treadle. 10. Beat weft with knife. 11. Stuff the shuttle through the shed. 12. Grab shuttle on near side of band. 13. Tug weft to adjust band width. 14. Start again at the beginning of instructions. This may seem awkward at first, but as the hands become familiar with the movements this becomes a very quick and satisfying way to weave warp-faced bands. By Anne Dixon. This book combines an introduction to the basics of inkle weaving with an exhaustive pattern collection. It begins with simple striping, continues with more sophisticated patterning, and ends with elaborate designs that incorporate beading, hand dyeing, and inlay. Each design is shown in a color photograph of a woven sample and accompanied by a color chart of the pattern and explanatory text. If you've dismissed inkle weaving as just something kids do for a day at summer camp, think again!

By Susan J. Foulkes. Northern Europe has a strong history of patterned woven bands. In the bands shown in this book, the contrast pattern warp threads work like the pattern weft threads in overshot or summer and winter--they skim over and under a background fabric, creating colorful motifs. You don't need a loom because this is backstrap weaving. Pick-up is used to select the pattern threads and a special double-slotted heddle is used to make picking up the pattern threads easy. Foulkes gives over 140 patterns for 5-, 7-, and 9-pattern thread motifs. The charts are large and easy to read and are accompanied by a woven sample of each one. The samples are shown in mercerized cotton but the same techniques can be used for wool or other fibers.
Double-slotted heddles of a variety of sizes and styles are available on Etsy, but Foulkes gives brief instructions for using a traditional rigid heddle or an inkle loom. Grab some yarn and get started making bands for friendship bracelets, bag straps, sashes, guitar straps, or leashes! www.yarnbarn-ks.com/Weaving-Patterned-Bands-How-to-Create-and-Design/productinfo/WB%2D9780764355509/ |
t hardly matters that this astounding book of band patterns is in Estonian. The pictures and printing are of extremely high quality. Each of the over 200 intricately patterned antique bands is accompanied by a clear multicolored draft of the pattern that matches the pattern colors of the band itself. Each band has a page to itself, including a photograph of the front and back sides of each band, in a pleasing uniform layout from page to page. A centimeter scale accompanies each band so you can see exactly how many threads there are per centimeter in each original piece. Towards the beginning of the book several methods of weaving are clearly photographed along with the equipment that is used. A few older photographs at the beginning of the book depict these beautiful bands in use in a variety of ways. This is truly a miraculous treasure chest of material that would otherwise only be available if you travel to Estonia and do extensive museum researchstore.vavstuga.com/product/book-randeestik.html.

Together these authors have created an outstanding book focusing on the woven patterned bands of the intricate Telemark folk costumes of Norway. This in-depth study presents not only weaving bands using a rigid heddle, but also an intriguing kind of special floor loom. An inserted reprint of a 1976 pamphlet by the Norwegian Folk Museum provides more details about the technique. The spectacular photography and clear diagramming make this a valuable book for the non-Norwegian speaker; however, there is significant amount of text about the various areas where these bands have been woven. A variety of finishing techniques are presented at the back of the book. In Norwegian.store.vavstuga.com/product/book-vesabunadb.html
